 BLOOD PRESSURE (part 1)

Blood pressure (B.P) = Systolic pressure/ Diastolic pressure

Systolic pressure = Pressure of the blood when the heart beats

Diastolic pressure = Pressure of the blood when the heart rests.

Blood pressure is the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your arteries.

i.e, Each time your heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries. Your blood pressure is highest when your heart beats, "pumping the blood".

HYPERTENSION AND HYPOTENSION

HOW TO DETECT HYPERTENSION (HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE)

One of the features of high blood pressure {HBP} is that it can be a very silent killer. You may never know that it is there. The only way to detect it is by always checking what your blood pressure reads. It is equally expedient for you to determine whether you have heart disease. Heart disease most times results from hypertension. When reading the blood pressure, you may have to do two things i.e check the blood pressure when the heart beats and then the heart rests. The blood pressure is read as the systolic pressure.

HYPERTENSION TEST

The test to determine if one has HBP is carried out with a sphygmomanometer. The instrument comparises a cuff that is wrapped around the arm and then inflated while the attached quage is then used to measure the pressure.

The result of the HBP test is reported in the following manner

  • Normal BP is when the blood pressure is less than 120/80mmHg
  • Pre-hypertension is when the blood pressure is between 120-139/80-89mmHG.
  • HBP (stage 1) is when the blood pressure is between 140-149/90-99mmHg.
  • HBP (stage 2) is when the blood pressure is above 160/100

SYMPTOMS OF HYPERTENSION

2. Nosebleed.

3. Fatigue or confusion.

4. Vision problems.

5. Chest pain.

6. Difficulty breathing.

7. Irregular heartbeat.

8. Blood in the urine.

9.     Sleeplessness, e.t.c

CAUSES OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

1.    Smoking.

2.    Being overweight or obese.

3.    Lack of physical activity (exercise).

5.    Too much alcohol consumption (more than 1 to 2 drinks per day)

6.    Stress.

7.    Older age.

8.    Genetics, e.t.c

DIETARY APPROACH TO STOP HYPERTENSION

  1.     Fruits

  2. vegetables

  3. Whole grains

  4.     Poultry, fish

  5. low-fat dairy foods.

  6. Get plenty of potassium, which can help prevent and control high blood pressure.

  7. Eat less saturated fat and trans fat.

  8. Decrease the salt in your diet.
