According to Health line, an infection can be likened to an invasion of tissues by pathogens or the growth of germs in the body.
The germs may be bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi, or other microorganisms.
Infections can begin anywhere in the body and may spread all through it.
An infection can cause fever and other health problems, depending on where it occurs in the body. When the body’s immune system is strong, it can often fight the germs and cure an infection. Some cancer treatments can weaken the immune system, which may lead to infection.
INFECTION IN WOMEN
Vaginitis (Vaginal Infection)
What Is Vaginitis?
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina. It’s due to an imbalance of yeast and bacteria that normally live in the vagina.
Along with discomfort, you may notice a smell that's different than usual. You could have an infection caused by bacteria, yeast, or viruses. Chemicals in soaps, sprays, or even clothing that come in contact with this area could be irritating the delicate skin and tissues. It's not always easy to figure out what's going on, though. You'll probably need your doctor's help to sort it out and choose the right treatment.
Types and Causes of Vaginitis
- Bacterial vaginosis is inflammation of the vagina due to an overgrowth of bacteria. It typically causes a strong fishy odor.
- Candida or "yeast" infection, an overgrowth of the fungus candida, which is normally found in small amounts in the vagina.
- Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in women, usually in those aged 18 to 35 who have multiple sex partners. The major cause of STI is a pelvic inflammatory disease.
- Gonorrhea is another common infection spread through sex. It often comes along with chlamydia.
- Trichomoniasis is an infection spread by sex that’s caused by a parasite. It raises your risk for other STIs.
- Viral vaginitis is inflammation caused by a virus, like the herpes simplex virus (HSV) or human papillomavirus (HPV), which spread through sex. Sores or warts on the genitals can be painful.
Yeast infection and bacterial vaginosis
Two of the most common causes of vaginitis are related to organisms that live in the vagina. They can have very similar symptoms.
- Yeast infections are an overgrowth of the yeast that you normally have in your body.
- Bacterial vaginosis happens when the balance of bacteria is thrown off. With both conditions, you may notice a white or grayish discharge.
How can you tell them apart? If there's a fishy smell, bacterial vaginosis is a better guess. If your discharge looks like cottage cheese, a yeast infection may be to blame. That's also more likely to cause itching and burning, though bacterial vaginosis might make you itchy, too.
It’s possible to have both at the same time.
Symptoms
- Your vaginal discharge changes colour, it’s heavier or smells different.
- You notice itching, burning, swelling, or soreness around or outside of your vagina.
- It burns when you pee.
- Sex is uncomfortable.
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Vaginal discharge that has a strong odor
- Irritation and swelling of the vagina and vulva
- Pain and burning sensations while urinating
- Irritation, itching, and burning in and around the vagina
- Thick, sticky, white discharge
- Swelling and flushing around the vulva and vagina
- white, green, or yellow discharge
- Bleeding during sex
- A burning sensation during urination
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- fever and headaches
Prevention
- Keep yourself clean and dry
- Avoid clothes that hold in heat and moisture-tight jeans, gym shorts and leggings that don’t breathe, and pantyhose without a cotton panel can lead to yeast infections.
- Eating yogurt with active cultures (check the label) might help you get fewer infections.
- Condoms are the best way to prevent passing infections between sexual partners.
INFECTION AND INFERTILITY
Do infection causes infertility?
Infection can directly or indirectly cause infertility in women and in men. When infections are left untreated, they can develop and cause infertility by moving up to the reproductive system and spreading to the woman’s uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes causing damage, scarring, or inflammation.
FEMALE INFERTILITY
Infertility is usually defined as the failure to conceive after a year or more of regular sexual activity during the time of ovulation. it may also refer to the inability to carry a pregnancy for long.
THE WOMAN'S MONTHLY CYCLE
- Each month a ripe egg or ovum (occasionally two) is released from one of the ovaries. This is called ovulation.
- The ripe egg begins to travel down the fallopian tube. it is here that it may be fertilized by a man's sperm.
- If the egg is not fertilized by a sperm, it passes out of the body through the vagina which is known as the monthly period. 2396, 2238
CONCEPTION
- A woman is most likely to conceive just after the time when she ovulates when an egg has been released from one of her ovaries. During sexual intercourse, sperm is ejaculated from a man's penis into a woman's vagina.
- Over 300 million sperms are released at once. Most of the sperm leak out of the vagina again, but some begin to swim up through the cervix. One sperm may then join with the egg and fertilize it. Conception is said to have taken place.
- During the week after fertilization tube and into the womb, It is already growing. The woman misses her period.
CAUSES OF INFERTILITY
1. Infertility can arise if the mucus remains thick and sperm are unable to swim through it, or if it contains antibodies that attack sperm.
2. Either or both of the fallopian tubes may be blocked or damaged, preventing sperm and eggs from the meeting.
3. The ovaries may fail to provide mature eggs or be unable to release them because of an abnormality, scarring, and adhesions.
4. The uterus may contain fibroid, and its lining may be affected by endometriosis.
5. Failure to ovulate; or the inability to release an egg is the most common cause of female infertility. Hormonal imbalance may be the cause of ovulating failure.
6. Ovarian problems; scarring due to surgery or cysts or the side effect of radiation treatment can damage the ovaries.
7. Infections; sexually transmitted infections like, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia e.t.c can damage the ovaries.
8. Hormonal imbalance; the imbalance of progesterone, which is necessary for fertile egg survival, may cause miscarriage if too little or too short, the egg may not survive. Estrogen the female hormone plays an important role in the fertility of the woman.
9. Birth control pills and injections; may cause infertility, in that the chemicals which prevent ovulation may do so far longer than the woman wishes.
10. Structural problems; the structure of the woman may be a cause of infertility in rare cases.
Make sure you know the cause of your own infertility by undergoing test.
